How Googlebot Sees Your Site
When Googlebot visits your website, it does not "see" it exactly like a human does. It downloads the code (HTML) and tries to figure out what links are on the page.
If you create a new page but do not link to it from anywhere, Googlebot might never find it. These are called "orphan pages."
Links are paths. Think of your internal links (links from one page on your site to another) as doors in a hallway. If you board up a door, the crawler cannot get into the room.
Controlling the Crawler
You can give instructions to these crawlers using a file called robots.txt. This file lives on your server and acts like a "Do Not Enter" sign for specific parts of your site that you do not want to show up in search results, like admin pages or shopping carts.
2. Indexing: The Filing System
Once Googlebot finds a page, it sends the data back to Google's servers. This begins the indexing phase.
Indexing is like organizing a library. Google analyzes the page to understand what it is about. It looks at the text, the images, the videos, and the code. If Google decides the page is useful, it adds it to the Index.
It Is Not Guaranteed
Just because Google crawls a page does not mean it will index it. Google frequently skips pages that are:

Rendering: The "Human" View
In the past, Google only looked at the raw text code. Today, in 2026, Google is smart enough to "render" the page. This means it runs the website's programming (JavaScript) to see the visual layout, just like your web browser does. Rendering takes a lot of computing power. Sometimes Google will crawl your text immediately but wait a few days to fully render the visual parts of your page.
3. Ranking: The Decision Maker
This is the part everyone cares about. When a user performs a search, Google has to sift through its Index of billions of pages to find the few that answer the question best. This is Ranking.

Relevance
Does the content answer the specific question the user asked? If a user searches for "best running shoes," a page about "hiking boots" is not relevant, no matter how good the page is. Google looks for keywords, topics, and clear answers.
Authority
Can we trust this site? Google assumes that if other prominent websites link to your page, it must be good. These links act like votes of confidence. A link from a major newspaper is worth far more than a link from a random, small blog.
Quality and Experience
Is the page easy to use? Google prefers sites that:
- Load fast.
- Work perfectly on mobile phones.
- Are secure (using HTTPS).
- Are written by people with experience and expertise.
